Latex Mattress Confusion

You may know that you want an organic, green latex mattress – but can you be sure that that’s what you’re getting? There are no latex mattress standards or official definitions, so there is a lot of confusion (and even misrepresentation) about a latex mattress. Only one word matters with latex mattresses: organic.

Latex should be natural.

The important thing to remember about latex is that it is a natural material. Latex is technically the sap of the rubber tree. Latex, then, is a naturally-occurring rubber product. In World War II, rubber rationing limited the amount of latex that could be used for consumer goods, so manufacturers began mixing synthetic materials in with natural latex or even using entirely synthetic rubber with the feel of latex. After nearly 70 years of manufacturers calling 100% synthetic or natural-synthetic blends latex, it’s not always clear that latex is a natural material, and that confusion can obscure the differences between synthetic and organic latex mattresses.

Lifekind is a sincerely natural latex mattress and is an organic product in two ways:

• Organic product
• Organic processing

There are no synthetic elements in the Lifekind latex mattress, no petrochemicals as in synthetic “latex” mattresses. Lifekind latex is organically grown overseas, in the natural rubber tree habitat. Our latex is imported in sealed metal drums, so the latex isn’t fumigated or chemically processed when it enter the US. All of the other components in the Lifekind mattress – both cotton and wool – are organically grown in the US. All of the materials in Lifekind mattress products are organically pure from their beginning.

Along with organic materials, Lifekind latex mattress products are made in an organic way.

Our factory is the only certified organic facility anywhere. That’s worth repeating – Lifekind latex mattress products are made in the US in the only mattress manufacturing facility which is certified organic.

Even better, the latex in our mattresses is as pure when it leaves the facility as when it goes in – we don’t use any boric acid or other chemical treatments for the latex to improve its flammability. (Latex is already naturally inflammable.)

The key to a truly organic latex mattress is to start off with the purest organic materials available and then build from there with good manufacturing – and we follow a pure organic system from beginning to end.
